If you changed your name because of marriage, divorce or for other reasons, you should immediately notify the Social Security Administration (SSA). This will help prevent delays in processing your return and issuing your refund, because SSA notifies the IRS of your change in name. Also, by letting the SSA know of the change, you will safeguard your future social security benefits. If you get a tax return package with a mailing label, be sure to print your new name on the label.

What is "itemizing?" How can I tell if it will help me?

You itemize deductions by filing Schedule A with Form 1040. On Schedule A, you list amounts you paid during the year for certain items such as medical and dental care, state and local income taxes, real estate taxes, home mortgage interest, and gifts to charity. If your itemized deductions are more than your standard deduction, your Federal income tax will be less if you itemize.
