PAYING FEDERAL TAXES FAQ
How long will it take to get my refund and
how do I check on its status?
About 4 to 8 weeks after you mail your return.
If you file electronically, it should take about 3 weeks. The
earlier you file, the faster you'll get your refund. To check
on the status of your refund, call Tele-Tax at 1-800-829-4477
How can I get forms and publications?
Call 1- 800- TAX-FORM or visit your local IRS
office, participation library, bank or post office.
Do I have to file a return?
It usually depends on your filing status, the
amount of your gross income, and whether you can be claimed as
a dependent on another person's 1994 return. See your tax forms
and instructions booklet for more information.
I just completed my return and I owe the
IRS money. What should I do?
Remember to enclose the payment when you file
the return. You should file even if you can't pay all of the amount
you owe. File by April 17, 1995, and pay a s much as possible.
If you use electronic filing, you can file early but may not have
to pay until April 17th. By filing on time you avoid the late
filing penalty.
How can I get an extension to file my return?
You can get an extension by filing Form 4868,
"Application for Automatic Extension of Time To file U.S.
Individual Income Tax Return" by April 17th. By requesting
the extension, you avoid the late filing penalty. However, if
you will owe tax, you should pay as much as you can with Form
4868.
How can I get my employer to give me my
W-2 form?
If you don't get your W-2 form by February
15, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. We will ask you for certain
information such as your employer's name and address. The IRS
will contact your employer requesting that your W-2 form be sent
to you.
Which form should I use?
Choose the simplest tax form that fits your
tax situation. It may save you time and reduce the possibility
of errors if you use one of the shorter forms. Many eligible taxpayers
are not taking advantage of filing Form 1040EZ, which could save
unnecessary tax preparation costs.
I got married late last year. Do I need
to notify the IRS that I changed my name?
If you changed your name because of marriage,
divorce or for other reasons, you should immediately notify the
Social Security Administration (SSA). This will help prevent delays
in processing your return and issuing your refund, because SSA
notifies the IRS of your change in name. Also, by letting the
SSA know of the change, you will safeguard your future social
security benefits. If you get a tax return package with a mailing
label, be sure to print your new name on the label.
What is "itemizing?" How can I
tell if it will help me?
You itemize deductions by filing Schedule A
with Form 1040. On Schedule A, you list amounts you paid during
the year for certain items such as medical and dental care, state
and local income taxes, real estate taxes, home mortgage interest,
and gifts to charity. If your itemized deductions are more than
your standard deduction, your Federal income tax will be less
if you itemize.
