Maybe not, but you've probably heard of a lot of the people we work with. One of our specialties is creating books on behalf of and in conjunction with leading properties, authors, and licensees. We also specialize in producing and creating unusual form ats that are ideally suited to top licenses. Here is a selection of some of the top names we have worked with.
What is Cader Books? Cader Books is a small producer of big books. What that means is that we are a relatively small group of very creative individuals, devoted to conceiving, creating, writing and producing fun, interesting, high-quality books. As a result, our books achieve big results--widespread publicity, strong sales, and a delicious flavor that lasts and lasts. We create original concepts that become national bestsellers (like our Brush Up Your Shakespeare!), and we are the people who well-known institutions--like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Saturday Night Live, the Smithsonian, People Magazine, Major League Baseball, American Movie Classics, Moosewood Restaurant, the American Heritage Dictionary, and even Lassie--turn to regularly to help make their books. In essence, we make books the old-fashioned way, laboring attention to every detail and investing our personal creativity and enthusiasm in every project, but we do so using state-of-the-art computer equipment and a staff trained to combine old-world editing values with modern-age means. Technically speaking, we are what the book business calls a book packager or book producer--which is essentially the book world equivalent of an independent producer in the movie business. We produce books in conjunction with other authors and institutions, and create our own original book projects, and sell those books to appropriate publishers. We provide a full range of editorial, design, and production services. Our specialty, though, is taking a good idea and giving it that great extra twist to make it into a terrific finished book.
Where can I find Cader Books? With luck, at any local bookseller, as well as at a number of gift stores, department stores, price clubs, and mass merchandisers. The trick is, our name is usually hard to find, since all of our books are published in conjunction with large publishers. If you're looking online, try including "Cader" or "Michael Cader" in your search criteria and your likely to find some of our titles. We're just giving this site a major freshening up; once we're finished, you should be able to find all of our active titles here, along with buying links to an online bookseller.
Why haven't I heard of you before? Book packagers are little-known outside of the industry. Though we have created and produced nearly 200 books and 100 calendars, including many national bestsellers, most consumers don't associate our name with our books. But within the book business, we are well-known for the quality and fun of our work. Also, it turns out that once you get past the biggest names--Random House, Simon & Schuster, et al.--most people outside the book business aren't that familiar with too many publisher's names. But the lifeblood of publishing is the literally thousands of small and mid-sized publishers that create and produce a vast array of new titles every year. And with the coming electronic revolution, that will be the case more and more.
How do I reach you the old-fashioned way? Cader Books Internships We offer regular summer and year-round internships. The basic deal is, we promise you a blend of no more than 50% busy work and 50% real learning the publishing process work. Since we are a small and informal company, you are easily and readily exposed to all different parts of the publishing process, and there is lots of opportunity to do real work, and get real credit for it once the book is published. We are particularly interested in people who can already demonstrate a real interest in publishing. What's the catch? We don't pay a lot for these internships; enough so that you don't feel like you are working for free, but not as much as you would make if you were working at McDonald's. And now our main office is way up north in Westchester, a least a mile or so north of the New York city limits. If you are interested, send us a cover letter, a resume, any samples or clips you might have, and indication of why you are interested in publishing and what you hope to get from an internship. Also indicate if you are applying to be a full-time summer intern or a part-time year-round intern. Send by snail to Internship Director, Cader Books, 2 Park Place, #4 Bronxville, NY 10708. |
